The Deputy Head of UNAMA for Political Affairs, Ms. Georgette Gagnon, visited Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, to discuss humanitarian concerns, regional developments, and progress under the Doha Process. At the outset, FM Muttaqi expressed appreciation for UNAMA’s condolences over recent earthquake victims and civilian casualties caused by Pakistan’s airstrikes in Khost and Kunar provinces.
Ms. Gagnon expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of women, children, and other civilians due to the bombardments. She emphasized that international laws must be observed and civilians should not be harmed during conflicts. FM Muttaqi reassured that Afghanistan is committed to safeguarding civilians while addressing regional challenges.
FM Muttaqi highlighted the work of the two working groups under the Doha Process, stating that narcotics cultivation in Afghanistan has been reduced to nearly zero. He also emphasized the measures taken to support the private sector, improve economic conditions, and promote national development. He stressed that now is the time for relevant international stakeholders to take further concrete steps toward progress.
Ms. Gagnon raised concerns about the closure of transit routes between Afghanistan and Pakistan. She noted that thousands of tons of UNAMA’s food and nutritional aid remain stranded, which directly impacts vulnerable communities and humanitarian operations.
Both parties discussed expanding cooperation under the Doha Process framework. Ms. Gagnon suggested initiating further joint efforts in other areas, emphasizing that UNAMA continues to engage with international donors to provide additional assistance to Afghanistan. FM Muttaqi welcomed these proposals and expressed his commitment to fostering constructive international relations.
The meeting concluded positively, reflecting mutual understanding and shared objectives. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued cooperation, humanitarian support, and the development of political and economic ties that promote stability and growth in Afghanistan.
